"Your Epidermis is Showing!"
That old joke reminds us just how important our skin is - as it is our body's largest organ. Though it covers and protects our entire body, it is easy to forget that it needs nourishment too, from the inside and the outside.
Through the outer epidermis, our skin provides a barrier to sunlight, heat, cold, infections, toxins and injury. Skin also retains water and regulates body temperature. This is accomplished through the inner dermis, which contains blood vessels, lymph ducts, nerve fibers, nerve endings, hair follicles and the glands that produce sweat to keep us cool. This layer also creates an oily substance called sebum which helps prevent the skin from drying out.
Basal cells can be found in the epidermis layer of the skin. These cells constantly divide and rise, where they are programmed to die and become the dead outer layer of the skin. Interspersed between the basal cells are melanocytes, which produce melanin. Melanin is a pigment that gives your skin and hair its color. the more you have, the darker you are- for example- people of African descent lived near the equator where more melanin is needed to absorb the ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
One very important job the skin has is to help you convert sunshine into Vitamin D.
