The epidermis is separated from the dermis by a basement membrane, and is not as thick as the dermis. It contains no blood vessels and receives its nourishment from the dermis. Most of the epidermal cells produce a protein mixture called keratin, which is primarily responsible for the structural strength and permeability of the epidermis, while others control skin color and are a part of the immune system.
